What is a herniated disc?

Disc herniation is a health condition that affects many people and is frequently associated with severe back pain and significant impairment of quality of life. Historically, the management of herniated discs has often included treatment options such as surgery, the use of corticosteroids and anti-inflammatories, as well as physiotherapy.

However, an innovative approach involves administering ozone directly to the site of the herniated disc, and has shown impressive results.

The mechanism of action for treating herniated discs

In this procedure, a mixture of ozone and oxygen is injected directly into the disc and potentially painful area. The ozone acts by oxidizing the proteoglycans present in the nucleus pulposus of the herniated disc, thereby reducing the volume of the disc and, consequently, the pressure exerted on the surrounding nerves.

What are the advantages of this procedure?

1. Minimalement Invasive

This method is less invasive than traditional surgery and can often be performed under local anaesthetic.

2. Rapid Pain Reduction

Many patients report a significant improvement in symptoms very quickly.

3. Low risk of side effects

Unlike corticosteroids, which can have undesirable side effects, ozone treatment is generally well tolerated.

4. Improving Mobility

Reduced pressure on the nerves means better mobility and improved quality of life.

5. Treatment repeatability

In cases where further treatment is required, the procedure can easily be repeated.

6. Cost-effectiveness

Since this procedure can often be performed on an outpatient basis and does not require a lengthy hospital stay, it is often more cost-effective than other treatment options.

Studies and research on herniated discs

A large number of studies have been carried out to assess the effectiveness of this approach. While the results tend to be positive overall, research is ongoing to assess the long-term effects and compare its effectiveness with traditional methods.

The use of ozone injection to treat herniated discs is a medical breakthrough that deserves serious attention. At Ozon 2000, we have integrated this method into our therapeutic arsenal, convinced of its potential to improve our patients' quality of life;
